Where children are travelling alone, Rex will carry them under the supervision of Rex staff as ‘unaccompanied minors’ where a number of conditions are met to ensure the safety of the child. Bookings for unaccompanied minors should be made through the Rex customer contact centre on 13 17 13 or via local travel agents.

Unaccompanied minors are supervised by Rex staff members from when the flight boards until they are met by the nominated parent or guardian at their destination.

  • Children aged 5 to 11 years inclusive are permitted to travel alone on Rex flights as unaccompanied minors.
  • Children aged 12 to 14 may also travel as unaccompanied minors at the request of their parent or guardian.
  • A child aged five or under must be accompanied by an adult on Rex flights. These children are permitted to travel on Rex flights if they are accompanied by a brother or sister aged 15 or over.
In the interests of the child, the following requirements must be met to enable them to travel unaccompanied:
  • The sending parent or guardian must remain at the departure airport until the aircraft on which the child is travelling has departed.
  • The nominated parent or guardian will meet the child at the arrival airport and will present suitable photo identification when requested by Rex staff.
    • Acceptable identifications are:
One form of photographic ID such as a drivers license
Two forms of non photographic identification such as a senior card or a bank card that include your signature
  • The unaccompanied minor will not need special services during the journey.
  • The parent/guardian must complete the information details in the Rex Junior Flyer wallet and make a declaration to the conditions outlined in the wallet.

For safety reasons, a maximum of 5 unaccompanied minors are allowed per Saab 340 flight and a maximum of 2 unaccompanied minors are allowed per Metro flight.

Unaccompanied minors should be able to travel without constant direct supervision, particularly on flights operated by Metro 23 aircraft that do not carry a flight attendant. If in doubt, please contact Rex on 13 17 13.

Change of Flight Destination

When an aircraft cannot land safely at the original scheduled airport and is diverted to an alternate destination, unaccompanied minors may land at the alternate port following consultation with the parents or guardians.

When the parent / guardian approves the transfer of the unaccompanied minor to the original destination by alternative transport, this will be at the sole discretion of Regional Express. In the event neither the receiving parent / guardian can be contacted, the unaccompanied minor must be returned to the originating port and returned to the sending parent / guardian.

Unaccompanied minors and connecting flights

Rex will accept unaccompanied minors that meet the above age criteria for connecting Rex flights where the transfer time between flights is one hour or less. For connections where the transfer time is more than one hour, or connections to and from other airlines, there are additional requirements:

  • For connecting Rex flights where the transfer time is greater than one hour, a person must be nominated and available at the transfer port to care for the child.
  • Rex can only accept unaccompanied minors for connecting flights with other airlines where the family nominates someone to be available to meet the arriving flight and care for the child during the transfer period. It is the responsibility of the child’s parent or guardian to ensure the requirements for unaccompanied minors set down by the other airline are met.
The relevant minimum connection times between flights must be met for unaccompanied minors travelling on connecting flights.
  • 25 minutes between Rex flights (30 minutes in Sydney)
  • 45 minutes between Rex and Virgin Blue or Aeropelican flights
  • One hour between Rex and Qantas and other domestic airlines
  • Two hours between international flights (2 hours 30 minutes in Sydney)
